Intial ideas for our music video

For this particular project we have been given the task of creating a 2-3 minute music video, using a song from an unisgned band. To find an unsigned band which shall not be well known, as a group we accessed onto www.unisgned.com to which we had a variety of genres and artists to choose from. We wanted to use a song which contanied lyrics that could be easily analysised and would help to give us a wide range of ideas for a music video. After choosing the band Scar and their song as long as you know, we then started to develop our ideas on this particular song and started to plan our storyboards.

Costume

  • Beard
  • Black clothing
  • Chains/studs/peircing
  • Bald wig
  • Ripped jeans
  • White dress for young female in shot

Fat/Thug
In a situation that makes him less masculine ( unsterotyped), however this is only showing him in this way in his dream. He will be doing some activties which will be rather unusal to his style and hobbies
eg
  • Pillow Fights
  • Painting each other nails
  • Lady and Tramp moment ( eating a meal together)
  • Having a Bubble Bath
Geek Character

This character would first be shown within the music video as the main gutarist, however later on during the video this character would then start to be developed as a geek style character who would be based on the main character from the video " Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheetus. He would be a character shown to the audience as someone who is pushed around by others and who is shown up by the jock style characters. However during the " dream" style scenes the geek character would be put in a rather unlikely sitaution with the young female in question. We would have the two character in his room where she would come across as being rather dominate when in comparison with the geek character.
  • Geek character would be thrown around by female ( he is too busy doing homework)
  • He helps her with her homework and akwardly kiss
  • Both practicing a chemistry experiment ( apply smoke machine)

Jock character

This character would be shown as the main singer within the band section, however during the process he will change into a " Jock" style character who every girl within the high school dreams about dating. He comes across as being someone who is rather " cocky" and someone who rather loves himself. We would base this character on the glee character " Noah Puckman". This character would then be put in a situation with the young female, here are a few that have been considered
  • Cinema
  • Horse back riding
  • Meal
  • Picnic in the park
  • Movie day

Emo/Goth style character
This charater will first be shown as the main bass player within the band. The first shot of him as the new character ( emo) will be him in a room by himself listening to some heavy rock metal. His hair, clothing and makeup will help to give an indication to the audience members what style of character he is, an edit could be used here where this main character is standing in the middle of the room and the people around him are moving quicker and more swiflty than he is. This could help to show how the charater is feeling at that certain time ( isolated?). He would be put in a sitaution with the female where both character would be at a classical concert or an opera, which helps to show the comical side of the music video as this is something which no emo or goth would attend.

Teenage Dirtbag Analysis

Teenage Dirt Back Baby Analysis

The first shot of this video is a shot including a young male on the stairs who seems to be sleeping. The type of clothing that he is wearing is giving an indication of when the music video was created and what type of character he is being portrayed as. The location the character is in looks rather dark and dull with the colours of the walls and the tone/shade of the lighting.

This music video is a narrative style video, as we have the main band performing in front of an audience, and also includes a dream style image of the young male in the shot with the girl of his dreams. Throughout this video there are some certain shots such as this one showing that this main character is very different from the others within the video. This is shown well through the use of costume and posture of this certain character.

This slow-motion shot of a young female getting out of a rather expensive looking car, helps to show the audience that this is most likely the young female which all guys “dream about”! The lyrics for this specific shot are Her name is Noel I have a dream about her She rings my bell” also gives indication of her name and how she comes across to the opposite sex. Her costume and the way she acts around the other males helps to show that she is a stereotypical American “Popular” girl.

The band “ Whetus” are based in two different locations within the video, one location when they are singing the main verses are based in the school gym. The camera pans around the band in a circle motion, for the chorus they are dressed rather differently and they are in which looks like a school corridor. To which the main characters within the music video are behind them singing and dancing to the song. This front view shot of the stereotyped geek walking throughout the corridor. Through this shot we can see the characters reaction to other stereotyped characters such as the geeks, jocks and emo’s. The camera starts to pan away from the character which helps to illustrate the characters distress and surroundment.

Throughout the majority of the video, the band and narrative are shown separately, however at the end they both come together. This could represent the two teenagers also coming together, which supports the idea of finding each other. There are 3 different sections to the narrative; arriving at school, during the day and finally the prom with a “will she/won’t she” finale. This gives structure to the narrative and flows consistently, the first verse acts as the beginning of the story, the second being the middle and the final verse and chorus is the ending. The audience feels sympathy for Jason Biggs’ character as he is essentially being bullied by the rest of his school. With the music video being set in an American High School (Jackson High) it supports the narrative of a teenage love story. The costumes the cast are wearing make it clear to the audience what purpose they represent.

"Teenage Dirtbag" is a song by American alternative rock group Wheatus. It was released in July 2000 as the lead single from their eponymous debut album. It was included on the soundtrack of the movie Loser. The single was massively successful in Australia, spending four weeks at number 1 and becoming the second-highest selling single of the year. It also reached number 2 in the United Kingdom and Germany

Main features of Rock music

The music features four sounds that make up typical rock music. First, there's the voice. The singer that is associated with rock music would be amplified, thus making it loud and capable of capturing the audience. If that doesn't do it, there are always the sounds of any rock band, the guitar and bass. Both these stringed instruments are always (or almost always) electric and produce two different sounds. The electric guitar in a rock band can be clean or distorted. An electric guitar with a clean sound is usually featured in ska, alternative, and even some punk. A guitar with distortion is usually heard in metal and hard rock. The guitar is the best-known instrument when people think about rock music. The bass is like the foundation of any rock band. It provides the simple notes and usually follows the guitar. Finally, there are the drums. The drums provide a raw, percussion sound that support whatever the guitar and bass are playing. These are the sound elements that make up rock.

The vocal styles of rock have been influenced by the vocals of the blues. The vocals possess a loud, moaning sound that can be traced back to the blues and even gospel singing. The instruments, particularly the guitar and bass, have a strong influence on not only the music, but also the audience. When one sees a rock performance, they see and hear the guitarists moving to the music with a certain passion that encourages the audience to imitate them. Rock music produces a powerful and raw sound that energizes the audience in a unique way.

Rock is a genre that has been integrated into society, and is considered the universal genre. Rock can be traced back as far as 1955, back when it was called rock ‘n’ roll. What made rock so popular was its appeal to white teenagers.
