Facebook Feedback

We decided as a group to add our final video onto our Facebbok page, this was to gather up enough information from the public on their personal opinions on our final cut. As you can see that there were a large amount of "likes" on this post to which some comments were also added to. Every comment was positive which helped to boost our confidence as a group and induvidually.

Magazine Advert

This is our final magazine advert which myself and the other group members have made between the group. We decided to include an image taken on one of the more modern cameras taken on day 1 of shooting as we wanted to link the magazine advert to the actual music video. This image was taken from a high up angle within the open air theatre at Tolethorpe. As you can see the lighting at the top of the image is incredibly bright, before editing this image this was not as visible to the human eye however after adding in more hue/saturation, contrast and colour. This newer image has a more eyecatching and visible look to it. When looking through inspiring rock music adverts they have all seemed to contain some trace of black and white colouring which helps to make the location and the band members stand out, leading to an increase in sales and budgets. We are wanting this for our music video so to have the same effect we decided to include the same effect. To see more information on magazine adverts see "Conventions of magazine adverts". We also wanted to include a bold title and font to bring more viewers to our album artwork, to ensure that this would happen, we weanted a colour which stood out well on the black dark background, so as a group we felt that blue would be the most appropriate colour to use. However to make our magazine advert more appealing and reliable we had to make up some of our own ratings to make it seem more realistic.

There is also another layer that has the solid colour of black over it, this makes up the black background. In terms of convention it sticks to the most typical/standard format or layout there is, this being band name at the top, relevant picture in the middle and additional information underneath including album name and a featured song. If we were to redo this whole magazine advert again , I feel that we would change the title of " Scar" into a more bolder title, and maybe include more images from the day of shooting to show the development of our production.

GreenDay- Wake me up when september ends music video analysis

Context
"Wake Me Up When September Ends" is a song by American rock band Green Day. It was released in June 2005 as the fourth single from their seventh album, American Idiot.
The song deals with the death of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong father, who died when Armstrong was a child. The director of this certain music video, as directed some of there more famous rock music videos such as "American Idiot" and " Bouvelvard of Broken Dreams".The video focuses on a very loving couple. The boyfriend promises never to leave his girlfriend but they later argue when the boyfriend enlists in the United States Marine Corps. The boyfriend interprets his actions as a way to show her that he loves her so much that he would put his life on the line to keep her safe; the girlfriend, however, is heartbroken, as he broke his vow to never leave her, and terrified at the thought that he might die in battle. The video then shows the boyfriend in battle in Iraq being ambushed by insurgents. This scene is intercut with scenes of the girlfriend tearfully mourning in a quiet field. The video ends on this juxtaposition, emphasizing the pain and heartache of losing loved ones due to the war.

At the very begining of this music video, the first shot is a long shot of a loving couple in an open feild. The left of them is the name of the song and the band name, as you can see it has been written in big bold white writing to stand out from the bright yellow scenery. As the couple kiss, it immedialty cuts to a close up of the young girls face as the begin to talk and embrace each other.
As both characters begin to talk to each other the camera cuts between a close ups of their faces, The camera then breaks away to a mid shot of the couple hugging, and the girl facing the camera, slowly the camera then begins to zoom as the opening of the song begins to play within the music video.

Straight away the next shot is shown of an extreme close up of the main singers dark black eyelined eyes, the camera then tilts down to his nose and lips as he starts to sing the first verse of the song. It then jump cuts back to the young couple again in the feild ( extreme long shot). The next shot is of the  couple lying down together, in the top left corner the sun is begining to set. Which helps to set a more of a romantic mood when looking at both of the characters. Following this there is then a slow cut of the couple walking past some benches and walk towards a fast food counter, to where the young female then is paying for their food. By using a long shot we were able to track both characters as they were walking round the people and the couple messing around together to show their connection between them.

The next scene then cuts to a establishing shot and the girl running through the front door, shortly after being followed by her partner. There is a quick cut to a mid shot where the young male is being engrossed by a video game ( sterotypical). There is a slow cut to a long shot of the couple at a party and an unseen person is holding an "18" birthday cake. A silhouette of the vocalist in the group is then shown on a red background, which helps make the outline of the band member stand out and make him look alot bolder.

The next shot is of a long shot on a closed door, through this door you can see the young female running forward to it. The music suddenly then quietens as the door is flung open. As the door opens the young female walks through, as the male is sitting outside. As the girl starts to talk her distress is apparent. As she starts to sob her boyfriend tries to comfort her she pushes him away showing to the audience that there is tension between the couple. During this scene there is a variety of close up shots of the characters talk to each other, which helps to show their reaction to the audience. As the boy leaves the scene the music then begins to pick up once more.

A long shot of the band follows. The lead singer is on the floor, whilst the other bands members are on different sized podiums. There is a red background and a large flash appears on the beat of the large drum solo. During this scene there a variety of close ups and mid shots. These are used to show the audience all different prospects of each band member. Each of the band members are wearing dark clothing so when the back lights are down there are individual shadows of the band members.

The black room change

When on the day of filiming on day 2, we had a range of shots to be completed by the end of the day. However as due to the fact of that there were only a few people availible on this day, we had to change one of the scenes from whole band shots to single shots in a dark room. We were rather stuck on how to create this certain room, as we had seen shots such as these one in inspired rock music videos. We took a certain room within the house being used and found some black matting to place along the back wall. The only difficulty we had with this was that we had to find something heavy enough to hold up these peices of material for a sutiable amount of time. We found some stray peices of wood which were strong and reliable enough to hold up the matting. To have a shadowy effect on the band members in shot we placed one of the heavy and stonger lights along a peice of wood across the room to get a good enough shadow around the back of the character.
Here are some of the images taken from the day of shooting

Miss Scott

  • Good use of shots
  • Good use of narrative and peformance
  • There are some major shakey shots

  • Needed to be better over-shoulder
  • Good shot transitions and sizes of shots
  • Good props used
  • Need to work on speed of shot transitions
  • Good use of syncing on Imovie
Mr Collier

  • 180 degree rule confusion ( breaking it with the finla scene of boy opening door to girlfriend, angle issue-different sides)

New storyboard shots

NEW DIGIPACK

This is our new digipak created by myself and the other media group members. We decided to change this style of Digipak as we felt that as we took some rather effective and compelling images during the days of shooting, and we felt that as a group we should be including these in our final digpak. We decided to complete this task on Photoshop, where we could edit and chnage a variety of things within this Digipak easily and sufficiently. Each of our groups knowledge on photoshop, helped to get this task completed in a short amount of time which meant that we could then move onto the magazine cover. Within this Digipak we wanted to have some style of illusion within it as this technique is also included within our final rock music video.

Lighting to be used on days of shooting

Altman 360Q Ellipsoidal Spotlight, 750 Watts - 55 Degrees (120-240VAC)
The Altman 750 Watt Ellipsoidal Spotlight is a compact, lightweight ellipsoidal reflector spotlight with 6" front lens which produces a high intensity sharp, or soft edged beam. Four adjustable integral stainless steel framing shutters provide beam shaping ability and the pattern slot and holder provide the ability to project visual images. Primarily designed for theatre and studio applications. This model has a wide 55° field beam spread. It can provide a beam of 56 footcandles 31 feet in diameter from 30 feet away. Its bulb socket is a 2-pin type. Models providing different beam spreads, and models with built-in irises are available.
  • This ellipsoidal is also useful in displays, show windows, museums and nightclubs where precision controlled accenting is desirable.
  • The reflector has over 700 mirror polished surfaces which optimize the optical system for greater light output and a sharper, more controlled focus.
  • Aluminum die-cast and sheet metal construction.
  • Replacement of bulb requires no tools.
  • Single focal length models are an economical choice, when compared to zoom ellipsoidals.
This certain style of lighting will gbe used mainly during the scenes on day 2 inside, this is because we felt that as this certain style of lighting had a strong, powerful light it would be able to create a high definition shadow around the actor within that certain area, giving it  a more rock style and feel to it. We are hoping to balence this certain light on a plank of wood across a table to make the light relfect from the bottom of the actos face creating a dark shade on his face.

NSI / Leviton Par 38, Black (120VAC)
The NSI Par 38 is a low cost, versatile lighting fixture designed for diverse applications. Intensities and beam spreads are a function of the bulb selected for use in the fixture. One unit can serve multiple purposes simply by changing the bulb. With an oval shaped beam, the Par 38 is ideal for use in concerts, nightclubs, television and film remotes and architectural applications where maximum flexibility is desired in a small, compact package.
The smaller size of the Par 38 offers maximum flexibility.
Baked black enamel finish
360° fixture rotation
Bulb replacement requires no tools -- accepts flood or spot bulbs with E26 screw base, up to 150 watts.
We hired three of these style of lights as they are small and light to carry around, we shall mainly be using these lights on day 1 to exhentuate the main band members facial expressions and the lighting around them. As these lights will mainly be used on day 1 of shooting , we shall be outside which means that these will only be used specifically in the darker areas of the chosen location.

rallonge-ultra.jpg
The ULTRA extension cord allows the user to reduce the weight carried on the head by disconnecting the battery pack from the headband and carrying it in a pocket or connecting it to the ULTRA harness
We felt that some extension cables shall be needed rather alot during the shoooting days, as if we were further away from a location that prefered and we needed a stronger light then this style of cable we come in rather handy to still allow us to have the prefered lighting that we orginally wanted without having to move lighting.

Storyboard for Rock Music Video Images

During the shooting days, instead of filming in the storyboard  order, we decided to film the shots randomly to gather up enough footage for us to edit and change to create our final video. However during some of the filming days we had to add in some more " dream sequences" as we felt that as a group there was not enough for us to edit. We took the storyboards with us to ensure that we were still sticking to the same storyline/narrative as we came up with during lessons. A couple of days before shooting this music video , we had a slight difficulty with the number actors being used as one of the main actors/characters chosen was unable to attend the shooting days, which meant that as a group we had to come to a decision os removing one of the characters. This was the " gay" character, as the scenes created for this character were not as important as the others. To fill this slot in we added in a girl character to play the guitar which included no " dream" sequence, allowing us to develope the more important scsnes involving the main singer and the young girl in question.
On day 1 we had a small problem during the middle of the day with the battery life on one of the main cameras being used, but to be prepared for a sitaution like this one we brought two extra cameras to back up our footage on to be placed onto a mac later on. As a group we felt that to keep the continuity of the footage each person should wear the same clothing worn the day before to the next day of shooting. The weather was the same throughout the two days allowing us to keep the same lighting when outside during the day.
