Location for our final music video
For our final music video peice, we were wanting to create a peice which is effective yet successful by the audience viewers and my media team. To ensure that this will be achievable, we are wanting to use a location which shows the style and emotion of our final peice and our characters being involved. When listing some locations for the first day of shooting, Tolethorpe Hall came up into converstaion as I had attented there for 8 years for acting classes. Tolethorpe is placed on a large peice of land which includes a small forest at the bottom of it which could be used well for the lighting and setting. Tolethorpe includes a variety of different styles of rooms from a bar to an oragery which includes large sqaure based windows which allows enough light for us to use throughout the day. From gathering all this infromation together, I decided to give one of the managers a ring to ask if myself and my team could use the premises for a day. When speaking to him, he asked what time we were wanting to have the use of Tolethorpe from and how many of us there were within the group. I was then asked to send the manager a email including all the given information for him to show to the administrators and gain their approvable. Underneath I have taken some screen shots of Tolethorpe and what It can offer myself and the public. As the location is only is Stamford we shall be driving to Tolethorpe as it is only a 20 minute drive from Bourne. We shall be filming here on the 14th November from 9.30-4. This time is allowing us to have a full day of filming footage for our final peice and being able to access some of the rooms within the house.

Representations of Rock
The term rock was mainly conjoined in the 1960's with bands such as Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Yardbirds, although the genre has its feet firmly in the roots of 1950's swing and blues and country acts such as Elvis Presley
From then many sub genres of rock have been introduced, some of these include
- Hard Rock-> System Of A Down
- Psych Rock-> Jimi Hendrix
- Progressive (Prog) Rock- Pink Floyd
- Nu-Metal/Rock-Limp Bizkit
Of course all of these types of rock music had a social impact on those days youth. Fashion and sub cultures were affected and not always for the best. Often people found image elevated way above the music itself and with festivals such as Woodstock drugs and alcohol often found their way into the lifestyles of musicians and their lyrics.
From the times of youth rebellion and going against the "norm", Grunge and Punk was formed. Iconic Punk bands include:
- The Clash
- The Sex Pistols
- The Buzzcocks
In the 80's we see the emerge on New Wave and Indie music. The music drew much influences from Punk but the lyrics change and drastically so does the image. It becomes clean cut. The lyrics are often to do with emotions. The king of being cynical being Morrissey from The Smiths.
"I was looking for a job and I found a job, heaven knows I'm miserable now" from Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now by The Smiths. The image was now based around gelling up your hair into quiffs and not Mohawks and your jeans being tight without holes in. Some say this was the golden era of music because of the impact it had on the youth, no lewd behaviour, no bad mouthing, no long hair swinging in front of your face (except for the birth of Hair/Glamour Rock that was born in America e.g Whitesnake, Def Leppard).
In the 90's we see the emerge of rap and house music, the use of electric music taking place of live musicians. Sometimes there were no lyrics used in the songs, just repetitive phrases of "riffs" or "licks". The image changed as this style of music appealed more to the black audience. The lyrics changed becoming more egotistical and about fame and sex, the use of swearing became more apparent so influenced the way that the youth of that generation spoke especially with the use of the "N" word, some say today that it has influenced the violence that has happened today. We also see the use of rap music coming in with heavy metal, where the lyrical and vocal style is still the same as rap but the electronic samples is replaced with live musicians and has the characteristics of heavy metal. The singer's ethnicity often changed to white so sometimes it lost respect of the black audience but it was able to make the crossover into the white audience so the fashion was made the hype, with baseball caps, baggy jeans and XL tshirts.
In the 00's/10's of today we see all this music and this is still apparent in today's youth with the social groups of:
- Chavs
- Emos
- Preppies (Indie Kids)
- Scene Kids
- Rockabilly/Nautical
- Punk

First ideas for music video
Becky- Relationship based, determined fast edits, simplistic, mostly band shots, inside location
very simple lighting, black and white costume, simple contrasting, female character who is pretty, and who looks back on her fondly.
Ben- Light hearted, band shots. mostly narrative. Male and female character. Girl in a white dress and the band in black ( showing the contrast). Summery setting and location. We would want to include a dream sequence of some sort however we want to make sure that this would not want to make this serious and make it a spoof of some sort. Each band member will have a scene will the girl in some way either in a dream sequence or in real life.
Elliott- Narrative, cheery, outisde, band shots, Blink 182 style, sum 41 and more seriousness, fast paced, Guitar, simple music, relationship based music video
Eddie- Outside setting eg Tolethorpe hall, Female character, slim curly hair, brunette, marron 5 style video, red dress, summery atmosphere, both band and narrative shots, Band would be unrelated to the girl in question, Band inside a garage, in casual clothin. Based on the music video by The calling- go wherever you will go.
Drummer- Fat
Voice-Normal
Guitar-a character who would not care
Bass-Nerdy
Typical characters starring in the music video
Costume
Gay-
Female- We have had a small idea of having the young female in the video wearing either a red or white dress. We have decided this because we felt that these colours are quite plain but shall help to show the emotion of the character.
Punk- For this character we are wanting the actor to wear rather punk/rock style clothing to indicate what their sterotyped character is. We are also wanting to have them in a black tie to show a more modern and up to date style punk.
Emo/Goth-
This is the style that we are wanting to achieve as a group for the Emo style character. We shall be basing this characters look from members of rock bands such as Greenday. Their iconic look of the black suits and bright red tie is something that we are wanting to look and try to keep within our characters fashion. The actor who will be playing this character may have to wear a small amount of eyeliner under the eye to emphasise the characters personality.
Popular/Jock- For this characters look we are wanting to create the popular american preppy look. We shall be achiveing this by researching into this character styles of clothing. We shall want to stick to basic colours such as blue and red, this is because this is the most sterotypical colours that a jock would wear on a daily basis.
Chav-
For this character it would be wearing clothing which chavs are steortyped to wear from fake burberry to hats and hoodies. We would ensure that the the way this character walked would also help to indicate what style of character he is. They shall be wearing mainly grey and dark blue as these are the colours that are mainly seen on people such as these.

Conventions of a Rock music video.
Conventions of a rock music video
Cinematography –
With alternative rock videos, the main goal is to show off the ‘musicianship’ of the band. Close-up and extreme close-up shots are used on the various band members to emphasize their musical talents. For example a guitar solo in a song, will probably be represented with a close-up of the guitarist in the band.
Wide shots are used often to represent the band as a whole, and to show their performance as a band.
All camera movements are used – Pan, tilt, tracking, jib,
Editing –
Because alternative rock songs are generally fast paced, rock music videos are cut in beat to the drum beat or guitar rhythm.
Mise-en-Scene –
Rock videos generally contain a performance by the band, usually on a stage to an audience. The mise-en-scene refers to the type of stage lighting used and practical stage effects such as dry ice.
Similar to indie rock videos, clothing is usually casual
Mise-en-scene is a reference to the props, sets, costumes, make up
and lighting used in a media text. It can also include posture and gesture. In
rock music video terms mise-en-scene is often simplified, with sets being a
stage with bright lights and even smoke machines. Band members often either
wear plain casual clothes (jeans, vests e.g. Kings of Leon - 'Sex on Fire') or
more elaborate outfits like glamrags (Steel Panther - 'Death to all but
Metal'). Examples of posture and gesture would be things like when a singer
screams into the microphone and either pulling it close or leaning into it, or
a musician playing a guitar might arch their back and lean the head forward.
Make up used in certain genres of rock music video (Death metal, emo metal,
goth rock) is often very black, using very dark eyeliner and often very pale
foundation to give a stark contrast.
The music video for ‘These Days’ by Foo Fighters is created by footage taken during their Australian and New Zealand tour. So the video consists of stage performances with large crowds. There is also a narrative with cameo roles which show the band members preparing for a gig, from leaving the house to practicing back stage before the show. The cinematography throughout is very conventional. A tracking shot is present when the camera tracks behind the crowd, zooms are used and handheld is used for the majority of the live performance shots along with lots of low angle shots which would have been taken from the ‘photography pit’ at the live gigs. Colour grading isn’t used like in Indie Rock videos. The different lighting set-ups at the various live performances add different colour tones to the band members whilst they perform. The video also includes sections of ‘live sound’ as well as the pre-recorded soundtrack throughout the video. Elements of ‘heavier rock’ videos such as smashing instruments are included in this alternative rock video.
music advert analysis
When first looking at this music advert, the main item that attracts myself and other audience members is the bright and bold title colouring and font size. The use of the mutli coloured lettering helps to attract audience members as the background that the title is placed on it rather dull and unattractive in some ways, which then helps to make the title stand out alot more in comparison to the front image of one of the band members. With the use of the main singer on the front of the album artwork, this helps to symbolise which band this music advert is promoting. The costume that the young male is wearing is rather hip and modern which gives it a more updated look and feel to it which would help to attract younger audience members. However I feel that this style that has been used is one which has never been used before by the band and the company, when looking through some of their older and newest album artwork, they have tended to use a " tattoo" style colours and fonts. Which helps to make this newer style of album artwork more orginal and something which could bring in more listeners and viewers. When first looking at this music advert, we can see that bold, vibrant and eyecatching colours have been used mainly to attract viewing audience members. The font that they have decided to use is a style which could help to show the emotion and feeling of the album. There use of pattern on the main images create an illusion and fantasy style. I feel that the main theme for this music advert is a subject relating to the sea or an ocean, this is due to the fact of that the main picture on the front is containing two fishes linked together with waves crashing behind them. This could help to indicate to the audience members what type and style of songs are on this certain album being promoted. This music advert is showing when this album will be released and even when they will be touring with this certain album. The background colour on this is rather dull and old fashioned and even gives a " tea stained"look and feel to it. As there is no image of the band on this music advert, the main title which is allocated at the top of the album is the only indication on who this music advert is promoting which could show that one image within this album artwork is a symbol of the band. I feel that this advert is rather simple but gives a clear connection to the cd cover which is using the same image in the advert.

Our Groups Digipak for Scar
Digipacks are a type of CD packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper/cardboard material. Digipacks can flip open like a book, or it can have three parts, so that one portion of the packaging opens to the right and one to the left, with the CD in the center portion. Usually, the portion of the digipack that hold the CD is made of plastic like a traditional jewel case CD - the plastic part is simply attached to the paper background.
Digipacks have pros and cons:
Digipacks have pros and cons:
- They look nice, and many bands and labels like to use them for aesthetic reasons. The three section digipack sleeves opens up more design options because there is more room. However, they're more expensive than traditional liner notes and jewel cases.
- Digipacks don't crack like jewel cases do, but they will rip and eventually the paper begins to peel apart and separate.
- The trays in digipacks break much more often then in jewel cases. There's not as much protection since the outer portion of made of paper, so the teeth that hold the CD in place crack and fall out easily.
- When the teeth of the tray does break in a digipack, the CD falls out of the bottom of the digipack, because unlike jewel cases, there is nothing to hold it in.
- Digipacks can be more environmentally friendly than jewel cases because they can be made of recycled paper - however, they aren't always in fact made in this way.

Album Artwork Analysis
This kiss album artwork, is probably the most famous one produced by the band due to their symbolic look and font to their Cd cover. The image on the front of the digipak is showing all of the band members in their full costume with makeup, however this has been done by animation and gives a more cartoony feel to the cover which gives a more friendly and welcoming feel to it. The use of lighter colours leading up to some more darker and depressing tones helps to give of the emotion and feeling of the album. Even though the font at the top of the artwork is rather small in comparison to the image, it still contains bold and eyecatching colours which would help to attract more audience viewers. The name of the album is called " destroyer", which helps to link back to the image on the front of the album, where the four cartoony style men are jumping up in the air with a yellowy fire colour beneath them. This could inidicate that these men are " destroying" something or someone?. Looking behind them there are some small builidings in the background which could represent a city of some sort. When looking back at their older artwork I can see that they have always used dark and dull colours, this has maybe been done to help to show the genre of their music and the mood they are wanting to portray to their audience. All members in the band are always in the shot on the album either as themselves or as a cartoony style image. I feel that this has been done to show their symbolic look to the rest of their fans and to the world.
